Petersen-Harlan Award

The Petersen-Harlan Award recognizes an individual, group, or organization that has made significant long-term or continuing contributions to Iowa history. Nominees shall have contributed a body of work advancing the preservation and interpretation of Iowa history. Each body of work will be evaluated for significance, professionalism, and influence on Iowans' perceptions of themselves. These criteria will be weighted equally.

The public may nominate entries for the Petersen/Harlan Award by mail. Usually nominations are due by February 1.  Late entries will not be considered. Nominators must submit the following information:

  • The name and address of the nominee

  • A detailed description of the significant long-term or continuing contributions the nominee has made to Iowa history. This description must provide enough information for the review and selection committee to judge the work against the criteria outlined above.

Only one Petersen/Harlan Award is given each year.
