As part of the annual Youth Art Month, 139 works
are on display. The art, created by students in grades
K-12, was chosen from more than 400 submissions from
nearly 50 Iowa schools, according to coordinator Mat
Safly.
Safly, an art teacher in the Ankeny school
district, said 11 best-of-show pieces are being
displayed in the governor's office. This is the 12th
year that the Art Educators of Iowa and the State
Historical Society of Iowa have sponsored the event.
Youth Art Month submissions are open to schools that
have a teacher who is a member of the Art Educators of
Iowa.
A recognition reception for the young artists will
be held at the Historical Building on Saturday, March
16, from noon to 3 p.m.
The State Historical Building, located at 600 E.
Locust in Des Moines, is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30
p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m.
on Sunday (museum only). Admission and parking are
free.
