This year, Iowa History Forum is being replaced by an all day event focused on Lewis & Clark. The event is sponsored by a National Park Service Challenge Cost Share Grant, the Iowa Lewis & Clark Commission, and the State Historical Society of Iowa. Speakers will discuss Native American health issues in the 200 years since the Lewis & Clark Expedition, current issues and what the future holds.

Speakers will include Robert Miller, Lewis & Clark Law School. Portland, Ore.; Linae Sundstrum, University of Wisconsin; Karl Reinhard, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Jessilene Anderson, University of Nebraska-Omaha; and Don Wanatee, Sac and Fox Tribal Member, with Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones, University of Nebraska-Lincoln as moderator. 9:15 – 9:30: Welcoming Ceremonies
by State Moderator, Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones

  • Cedar Blessing Ceremony, Doran Morris, Sr., Treasurer, Omaha Tribal Council
  • Posting of Tribal, State, & U.S. Flags (hopefully of all tribes represented)
  • Omaha Tribal Flag Song, Rufus White, Omaha Tribal Member
  • Introduction of Iowa Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commissioners

9:30 – 9:45: Opening Remarks

  • Subject matter for the symposium is health related issues chosen because of Sgt. Floyd’s death near Sioux City, Iowa
