COUNCIL BLUFFS – Saundra Leininger, a museum
guide at the Western Historic Trails Center, was among
30 employees and volunteers from Iowa’s welcome
centers who participated last month in the Iowa Tourism
Office’s annual Welcome Center Training and
Familiarization Tour.
The event gave travel counselors the opportunity
to experience many of the state’s attractions
first-hand, which helps them relay better information
about Iowa’s travel opportunities to visitors
seeking assistance at welcome centers. The Iowa Tourism
Office is a division of the Iowa Department of Economic
Development.
Owned and operated by the State Historical Society
of Iowa, the Western Historic Trails Center in Council
Bluffs is an Iowa Welcome Center and a historic site
that interprets the Lewis and Clark, California, Oregon,
and Mormon Pioneer trails. WHTC covers 480 acres of
river bottom adjacent to the Missouri River and Interstates
80 and 29, including the Lied Historical Building
and Harvey’s Recreation Complex.
Leininger has been a WHTC museum guide since 2004.
“Saundra and the rest of our staff are delighted
to welcome thousands of travelers and other visitors
to our center each year,” WHTC Manager KC Hummel
said.
The State Historical Society of Iowa is a trustee
of Iowa’s historical legacy and an advocate
for understanding Iowa’s past. It identifies,
records, collects, preserves, manages and provides
access to Iowa’s historical resources. Its dual
mission of preservation and education serves Iowans
of all ages, conducts and stimulates research, disseminates
information, and encourages and supports historical
preservation and education efforts of others throughout
the state. More information about SHSI is available
at www.iowahistory.org.
