Iowa - Sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the State Historical
Society of Iowa in partnership with the American Institute of Architects, Iowa
Chapter (AIA Iowa) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The purpose of the conference is to provide information to school superintendents,
school board members, architects, engineers and preservationists on how to:
- preserve and maintain historic schools as schools;
- find new uses for old schools;
- understand the role of the State Historical Society of Iowa in the use of
federal grant monies for education options and decision points on the value of
historic buildings; and
- provide a quality environment which meets educational needs for the 21st Century.
Conference registration is $50.00 ($20.00 discount for non-profit organizations).
Pre-registration is due by Friday, June 6. For an additional $10.00, participants
can reserve a special guided tour of a recently rehabilitated school building
in the Des Moines Independent School District and box lunch. Advance registration
is required for the tour and box lunch.
The keynote speaker is Royce A. Yeater, AIA, Director, Midwest Office, National
Trust for Historic Preservation, who will discuss the Trust’s interest in
preservation of neighborhood schools. Donald E. Longwell Jr., from Ohio, whose
primary practice is working with for-profit and non-profit developers and investors
in structuring rehabilitation historic tax credit transactions will also be presenting.
Michael L. Tramontina, Executive Director of the Iowa Finance Authority and John
Darveau, AIA, StruXture Architects, will make presentations on rehabilitation
options for historic school buildings.
