COUNCIL BLUFF,
Iowa — The Western Historic Trails Center located at 3434 Richard Downing
Ave. (Exit 1B off I80/29) will welcome Lewis & Clark re-enactors, area musicians,
historians and Native American dancers, artists and food vendors on July 25-27
for the annual Catfish Living History Weekend.
As part of the event, Western
Historic Trails Center, in partnership with the Iowa Western Community College,
will again this year offer an Elderhostel on the topic of Lewis & Clark. Lectures
are planned for each day and will include speakers from the Otoe/Missouria and
Mandan/Hidatsa Tribes.
On Saturday and Sunday, a living
history camp will be set up by local re-enactors along the WHTC bike trail. Here,
visitors can view period tents, clothing and weapons demonstrations, equipment,
military drills and how cooking was done over an open fire. In addition, Friends
of Discovery from Onawa will have replicas of the boats used by Lewis & Clark
on display and will be available to answer questions about them. The camp will
be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
There will also be period music
all three days in the Western Historic Trails Center atrium provided by local
musicians; as well as Native American dancing on Saturday. A list of speakers
and performers is attached. Shopping is available in the WHTC gift shop all three
days and will feature Lewis & Clark books and memorabilia and Lakota art.
There will be opportunities to sample Native American cuisine from the Omaha Tribe
at a vendor’s booth.
All activities throughout the weekend
are free and open to the public and are made possible by the State Historical
Society of Iowa and through grants from the National Park Service and Humanities
Iowa.
