The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved a special license plate commemorating the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Journey.

Before the DOT can have these license plates manufactured, 500 pre-paid applications must be received. The Iowa Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission is collecting these applications. (To download application, see below.)

Revenue generated from the sale of the license plates will go toward activities commemorating the 200th anniversary of this epic journey.

If you are interested in obtaining an Iowa Lewis & Clark Bicentennial license plate, please complete the application form available below. Print the form and mail it. The application must be accompanied by a check made payable to the Iowa Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission. Submit $35 for a regular numbered plate, or $60 for a personalized plate.

Mail the completed application and the check to:

Iowa Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission
c/o Kathy Gourley, Commission Member & Field Historian
State Historical Society of Iowa
600 East Locust
Des Moines, IA 50319-0290

Once 500 pre-paid applications are received, the Commission will submit the application package to the Iowa DOT. The manufacturing and distribution of the plates will be 6 to 8 weeks after the DOT receives the 500 applications. Distribution of the plates will be through the vehicle owners’ county treasurers’ offices. When notified that the plates are ready to be picked up, the owners will exchange their regular plates and registration for the new Iowa Lewis & Clark Bicentennial plates.

If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Gourley at kathy.gourley@iowa.gov or at 515-281-6913.
