MOINES, Iowa - The results are in! Ninth
through 12th grade students from around
Iowa came to the State Historical Building in Des
Moines on Monday, May 6 to compete in the National
History Day in Iowa event.
Fourteen individual or group projects were selected
as winners in the competition and will now have an
opportunity to show their projects at National History
Day, June 9-13 in College Park, Md. Award winners and
alternates, as well as special award recipients, were
announced during a ceremony at the conclusion of the
day.
Categories included papers, individual exhibit,
group exhibit, individual documentary, group
documentary, individual performance and group
performance. All entrants must have submitted a
project centered around the theme, "Revolution,
Reaction, Reform in History." Historians,
educators and others interested in history served as
judges at the state level.
"History Day really allows the students to get
a feel for thorough research of a historical topic
while being fun at the same time," said Crystal
Johnson, NHD state coordinator. "The quality of
the entries we received this year showed that the
students saw this opportunity as much more than just a
'project.' We hope the skills they learn through
this process prove to be invaluable in their academic
futures."
