SHSI Announces New Board Members

DES MOINES, Iowa—The State Historical Society of Iowa is pleased to announce four new members to its Board of Trustees. The Board currently has 11 members, with one empty slot that will be filled next spring.

Michael Vogt is one of three elected members of the Board and presently serves as curator and museum technician for the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum at Camp Dodge in Johnston. He has previously been employed as museum director for the Historical Society of Marshall County; site supervisor at Living History Farms in Urbandale; and assistant instructor at the Center for American Archaeology in Kampsville, Ill. He presents frequently at state and regional museum and history conferences and has published articles on American and military history in magazines, newspapers, journals, books and encyclopedias. Mike and his wife currently live in Des Moines.

Chuck Offenburger serves as an appointed member of the Board. He is perhaps best known for his "Iowa Boy" column in the Des Moines Register and spent 16 years co-hosting RAGBRAI. He now also serves on the board of Iowans for a Better Future, a successor group to Gov. Tom Vilsack’s Strategic Planning Council on which he also served. He also writes for his own news and opinion Web site and has authored five books about Iowans. Chuck and his wife currently reside in Storm Lake.

Theresa Weaver-Basye also serves as an appointed member of the Historical Society Board. She has been employed as Curator of Education at the Sioux City Public Museum since 1998. In 2002, she was appointed to the Governor’s State Commemorative Quarter Commission. She has worked as the Lanesfield School Historic Site Manager in Johnson County, Kan., the Bureau of Land Management and the Kansas State Historical Society. Theresa and her husband currently live in Sioux City.

William Morris is also an appointed member of the Board. Morris is a Des Moines attorney and military historian. Morris’ work is included in the book "Outside In: African-American History in Iowa."

Peggy Whitworth, director of Brucemore Mansion in Cedar Rapids, was named the new chairperson, and John Liepa from Indianola was named Vice-Chair.
