Iowa Heritage
plates have the same basic design and color of regular
license plates. They are distinguished by the charming
American Gothic House in Eldon and the words
"Iowa Heritage." The American Gothic House
served as the backdrop of Iowan Grant Woods' painting American
Gothic. By displaying your Iowa Heritage plates,
you will celebrate one of the world's most recognized
images. The State Historical Society of Iowa
administers the American Gothic House, which is listed
on the National
Register of Historic Places.

How
To Get Your Iowa Heritage Plates
Take your
current plates and registration to your county
treasurer and request Iowa Heritage plates. These
plates display five characters - the letter
"H" followed by four numbers. The initial
cost is $35 in addition to your regular registration
fee. In following years, there is a $10 annual renewal
cost in addition to your regular registration fee.
You may
purchase gift certificates for Iowa Heritage Plates
from your county treasurer for $35. Thereafter the
renewal fee is $10 per year. Personalized Iowa
Heritage Plates or gift certificates for them cost $60
and need to be ordered from the Iowa Department of
Transportation. The renewal fee in following years for
personalized Iowa Heritage plates is $15 per year.
