| Emergency
Mini-Grants
In light of budget restrictions
facing many schools and families, the State Historical Society of Iowa will be
granting up to $5,000 in Emergency Mini-Grants to help Iowa schools continue to
offer high-quality history education experiences in conjunction with the National
History Day (NHD) program. Typical grants will be $50-$500.
Background of National
History Day in Iowa
The National History Day in Iowa program is coordinated by the State Historical
Society of Iowa, with the help of its sponsors State Historical Society, Inc.,
Cargill, and the American
Legion of Iowa Foundation. NHD in Iowa is a state affiliate of National History
Day in College Park, Md. Iowa is divided into 14 regions with district coordinators
in various AEAs, universities, museums, and schools around the state. The primary
goal of the Iowa program is to improve the teaching and learning of history in
our schools. In order to motivate students and reward excellent work, we organize
a competitive series of district, state, and national events where participants
may compete for prizes and scholarships. For general information about the National
History Day program, visit www.nhd.org.
The Emergency Mini-Grant
program is funded by a federal
earmark, with additional support by NHD in Iowa donors.
Grant applicants may apply
for funds to help make possible research or contest experiences that they might
not otherwise be able to afford. It is important to the State Historical Society
of Iowa and its supporters that all Iowa students have the opportunity to participate
in the NHD program.
The following list includes
only a few of the many types of project proposals that could be funded:
- Transportation or substitute
teacher costs for research days, workshops, or contest events
- Contest fees for students
who qualify for free or reduced lunches
- Project-related supplies
or photocopying funds for students who qualify for free or reduced lunches and/or
economically at-risk schools
