Innovation Mini-Grants

In light of budget restrictions facing many schools and families, the State Historical Society of Iowa will be granting up to $5,000 in Innovation Mini-Grants to help Iowa schools expand, improve, and innovate their history education programs in conjunction with the National History Day (NHD) program. Typical grants will be $100-$500.

Background of National History Day in Iowa
The National History Day in Iowa program is coordinated by the State Historical Society of Iowa, with the help of its sponsors State Historical Society, Inc., Cargill, and the American Legion of Iowa Foundation. NHD in Iowa is a state affiliate of National History Day in College Park, Md. Iowa is divided into 14 regions with district coordinators in various AEAs, universities, museums, and schools around the state. The primary goal of the Iowa program is to improve the teaching and learning of history in our schools. In order to motivate students and reward excellent work, we organize a competitive series of district, state, and national events where participants may compete for prizes and scholarships. For general information about the National History Day program, visit www.NationalHistoryDay.org.

The Innovation Mini-Grant program is funded by a federal earmark, with additional support by NHD in Iowa donors. The mini-grants are intended to help both new and veteran NHD schools improve their History Day programs.

Mini-grant funds could fund many different types of proposals, such as:

  • Purchase of books, journals, or other resources for History Day research
  • Substitute teachers or travel costs to help teachers new to the NHD program attend and/or judge at the district or state events in preparation for next year
  • Honoraria for guest speakers such as university historians or museum specialists
  • Contracts with experts outside of school (universities, museums, local historical societies, etc.) to provide special services or opportunities for students
  • Stipends for teachers who wish to create analysis reports evaluating student progress and growth through History Day
  • Creation of lesson plans or curricular materials that can be shared with other teachers
  • Special services for NHD participants provided by historical and/or research institutions
  • Technology upgrads & equipment to improve project production

Applicants may also request partial funding for a larger expense, such as computer equipment or software, if additional funding is available to cover the remaining cost.

Projects should be completed by June 30, 2006. A short written summary or copy of materials developed with grant funds should be submitted to the state NHD office after the completion of the project.

To Apply
NHD teachers, media specialists, school administrators, museums, universities, or historical societies should submit the attached Application Information Form and a one-page proposal including the proposed project budget to the state NHD office. NHD teacher applicants may teach any subject. The proposal should include a detailed description of the planned project or purchase, with budget, and its goals. If this mini-grant will be used to match other project dollars, the source of the other funds should be noted in the budget. Each school may apply for up to two different innovation grants. Projects that have potential for future use or impact beyond this school year will receive first priority. Grants will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis.
