Iowa has nominated over 2,400 properties to the National Register of Historic Places, including historic districts containing over 6,000 individual buildings. Every month, additional properties are added. To find out which properties are listed in each of Iowa’s counties, please select the county below.
The National Register Information System Database (NRIS) is a computerized index developed by the National Park Service. NRIS can be used to find additional information on National Register properties in Iowa and across the country. The NRIS can also be used to review historic contexts prepared for Iowa properties (Thematic Resource documents, Multiple Resource Area forms, and Multiple Property Documentation Forms) by searching for part of the context’s name in the Resource Name field. Examples would be entering “Shelby and Audubon” to find “Ethnic Historic Settlement of Shelby and Audubon Counties MPS” or “footlights” to find “Footlights in Farm Country: Iowa Opera Houses MPS”. Search the National Register Covers on NRIS.
