Technical Assistance

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is committed to each of the five goals outlined in Iowa’s Statewide Historic Preservation Plan, Imagine Iowa 2010: Resources within Reach:

  1. Broaden knowledge about places important to Iowa history, architecture, and archaeology.
  2. Build and strengthen local preservation capabilities.
  3. Reduce rural losses of historic places.
  4. Strengthen protection of historic and prehistoric resources.
  5. Link preservation to improving the quality of life in the state.

Although the plan’s goals and objectives are meant to be carried out by partners in preservation throughout Iowa, SHPO facilitates the successful completion of the goals and objectives by providing technical assistance and preservation guidance to state and federal agencies, local governments, and the general public.

If you are looking for historical or archaeological consultants, preservation training or general information about Iowa’s historic resources and how to preserve them, we can point you in the right direction.
