The State Historical Society
of Iowa charges a use fee based on its ownership of the physical materials in
its collections; this fee represents no claim to copyright any of the materials
in question, although the Society may hold copyright to some of those materials.
Payment of the use fee does not constitute, and should not be viewed as, permission
by a copyright holder to reproduce works that are copyrighted. Users must determine
on their own if the use they intend to make of images invades copyright, rights
to privacy, or other rights.
Some examples in which
NO USE FEE is charged (for non-digital distribution) include:
• Personal interest
or research, or student projects.
• Educational programs, kits, films, etc., when produced by non-profit agencies
in Iowa.
• Exhibits at non-profit museums, libraries, and historical agencies in
Iowa unless produced by out-of state vendor.
• Small editions of books, scholarly journals, literary magazines (editions
or circulation of less than 1,000)
• News media.
Examples in which a USE
FEE IS CHARGED includes:
• Any advertising,
marketing, fundraising and promotional materials.
• Book or magazine publication (includes standard trade or text books, university
press publication or scholarly publications with circulation over 1,000).
• Calendars, posters, postcards, novelty items.
• Commercial decorative display (e.g. restaurant, waiting rooms, retail
outlets).
• Film, television, or video production or broadcast.
• Exhibits at museums, libraries, and historical agencies out-of-state,
or produced by out-of-state vendors.
• Educational programs, kits, films, etc. by Iowa non-profit organizations
or agencies produced by out-of-state vendors or producers.
A use fee is charged for ANY electronic publishing project, including, but not
limited to World Wide Web, CD-ROM or DVD, and software applications.

Fees listed below are for
non-exclusive, one-time, North American rights only. For one-time, non-exclusive,
worldwide rights, add 50% to the fees below. Fees for other uses, for more than
10 images, or for products and sales in which SHSI images are the focal point,
may be subject to a licensing agreement or negotiation.
