VISITING THE CAPITOL

THE IOWA CAPITOL BUILDING

The interior of the Iowa Capitol is one of the most ornate in the nation. Twenty-nine varieties of marble, and many fine woods are found throughout the building. There are many statues and fine artworks that tell different stories of civilization.

Other things to see include a model of the USS Iowa, bells from the ship, dolls depicting former first ladies, a 26 ft long photographic reproduction of the 168th Infantry after WWI and the Iowa Constitution.

At various times throughout the year the building is alive with activity. It remains the center of government for the people of Iowa. The General Assembly, Supreme Court and Governor continue to serve Iowans in the building.

The Capitol grounds surrounding the building offer many other interesting things to see, including statues, monuments and war memorials.

IOWA’S BATTLE FLAGS ARE DISPLAYED IN THE ROTUNDA CASES ON A ROTATED SCHEDULE

As each flag is stabilized, preserved and prepared for public display they will be rotated into the reconstructed rotunda alcove cases.

The flag is displayed in an upright position in a specially designed frame. A label with specific information related to the flag and the regiment is designed and displayed with the flag to help the visitor understand its history.

A brief PowerPoint presentation is also available to the visitor in a nearby kiosk.

Each year the Capitol has over 100,000 visitors, comprised not only of Iowans, but of people from all over the world. Capitol tour guides give about 2,000 tours to over 35,000 people each year.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Capitol by picking up a map at the information desk on the 1st floor. The map includes a brief overview of many key attractions in the building.

A better experience is to take one of the free tours provided by the trained tour guides. These last about one hour to one hour and 20 minutes.

Tours can be scheduled between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Saturday tours are every hour starting at 9:30 and ending at 2:30. Groups must schedule in advance.
