This flag is composed of fragments from Iowa’s
Civil War battle flags held in the State Historical Society of Iowa--Iowa
City collection. It is believed that it was created by a staff member.
At the time of its creation in the 1920s this was an acceptable preservation
method employed by museums. The belief was that the creation of this flag
would ensure that at least sections of each Civil War flag would always
exist and be easily displayed. Today, conservation of objects focuses
on the prevention of additional harm and alteration. Standard practice
requires that treatments be reversible.
This flag serves as an important tool in the conservation
efforts of Iowa’s battle flags. Since it was kept out of direct
sunlight–a truer version of each flag’s coloration has been
preserved. This can serve as a marker in determining the level of deterioration
and fading that has occurred over the years on the flags exposed to other
environmental conditions.
