ADOPT A FLAG

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

“My interest in the Civil War goes back to stories my grandmother would share of her father, John W. Schooley, Assistant Surgeon in the Third Iowa Infantry.

Over the years I made frequent trips to the Capitol to view the battle flags on display in the rotunda cases.

In October of 2004, It was my good fortune to be present when the Third Iowa’s national flag was removed from its case, carefully unfurled and photographed after all those years. One can only imagine my emotions, knowing that great grandfather had probably spent many hours in the presence of that flag.

The Adopt a Flag program gave me the chance to help fund the preservation of that magnificent banner which meant so much to my great grandfather and the other soldiers of the Third Iowa Infantry. It’s an honor to assist.”
