In the spring of 1865 the Civil War was quickly coming to an end. General J. H. Wilson’s Cavalry moved to secure the navy yards, weapons factories and supplies at Columbus, Georgia.

On the afternoon of April 16, 1865, the regiments, including the partially dismounted 4th Iowa cavalry, rushed to capture the bridge over the Chattahoochee River and enter the City. During the engagement the regiment captured a fort protecting the bridge approach, 12 pieces of artillery and 8 battle flags.

General Wilson stated that Pvt. Bebb captured one flag about 100 yards from the bridge when the rebels near it ran away.

Other 4th Iowa Cavalry members who received the Medal of Honor in this action include: Sgt. N. F. Bates, Sgt. H. L. Birdsall, Pvt. H. L. Cosgriff, Pvt. John H. Hays, Cpl. R. H. Morgan, Pvt. A. W. Tibbets
