Edgar Bras was born October 6, 1841, in Jefferson County, Iowa. He was described as 5’8” tall, with dark hair and blues eyes when he enlisted in the 8th Iowa Cavalry.
He received a bullet wound in the upper thigh at the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862. The bullet was never removed. At the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, October 4, 1862, he received a bullet wound behind his left eye.
After the war he returned to Iowa, but then began seeking a new place to farm. He moved first to Kansas, then Nebraska, Oklahoma, and finally Florida.
He died June 24, 1923, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
