The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military award, given in recognition of distinguished gallantry during hostile action. It is presented by the President of the United States in the name of Congress. Since its inception in 1862, 108 Iowans from 10 conflicts have received the medal. This program is established to honor these Iowans and their service to the nation.

The State Historical Society of Iowa wishes to thank state Senator Dennis Black for his support and research which is the foundation of this project.
