This hour-long, behind-the-scenes walking tour explores the State Historical
Building’s Battle Flag Preservation Laboratory. Staff offer an educational presentation on how Iowa’s Civil War, Spanish American War and World War I battle flags are preserved.

Technician Sheila Hanke explains preservation treatments.Participants will be able to view in-progress stabilization treatments, gain an understanding of the meticulous process of stabilization, and learn about the exciting military history of the flags.

Tour Dates and Times
Tours are held at 1:30 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month.

Tour admission is $20 per person. Members of the State Historical Society of Iowa receive a 10% discount. Tours fill-up quickly, so make reservations far in advance!

 

Preservation methods are demonstrated.Due to the highly sensitive nature of the work involved with stabilizing and preserving Iowa's historic battle flags, each tour is limited to 10 participants age 7 and older.
