The State Historical Society’s Country School Grant program provides up
to $5000 per applicant for the preservation and maintenance of Iowa’s one
and two-room country schools. The funds may also be used for interpreting the
history of country schools or for educational activities taking place in a country
school.
Historic Preservation
Tax Credits

State and federal rehabilitation tax credits are available for qualified rehabilitation
of historic properties. Qualified rehabilitation of historic properties includes
consultation with the State Historic Preservation Office to ensure the project
meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines
for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings. The properties must be eligible for, or
listed on, the National Register of Historic Places. Typically, developers taking
advantage of this program have converted historic schools into new uses, including
housing.
Iowa Demonstration
Construction Grants

Iowa Demonstration Construction Grants are available through the Iowa Department
of Education. The grants, available to Iowa public school districts, are used
primarily for correcting life/fire/safety issues and for new construction, repairs,
and rehabilitation work. Although the property need not be historic, grant recipients
must assist the Iowa Department of Education with their responsibilities under
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This involves consultation
with the State Historic Preservation Office once the grant is awarded.
