National Trust
for Historic Preservation: Historic School Success Stories
http://www.preservationnation.org/issues/historic-schools/
One of the best ways to learn is by example. The National Trust for Historic Preservation
provides dozens of success stories that illustrate preservation and/or rehabilitation
of historic schools across the nation. Each story includes contact information
for those who were involved in these important projects.
National Park Service:
Preservation Briefs

Working with older buildings inevitably involves important decisions about how
to treat historic building fabric. The National Park Service’s Preservation
Briefs provide guidance on preserving, rehabilitating, and restoring historic
properties. The Briefs are fully illustrated and easy-to-read. Administrators
of historic schools can find information about cleaning, repointing, and removing
graffiti from historic masonry (Numbers 1, 2, & 38); repairing roofs or selecting
replacement roof materials (4, 19, 29 & 30); repairing historic wood and steel
windows (9 & 13); adding on to historic buildings in an appropriate manner
(14); and making sure historic buildings meet current building codes (3, 24, 32,
37 & 39).
National Park Service:
Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties

Properties promote responsible preservation practices for historic properties.
Each of the four treatments (Preservation, Rehabilitation, Restoration, and Reconstruction)

and Guidelines to help historic building guardians make decisions regarding
treatment.
