Nineteenth and twentieth-century Sanborn fire insurance maps are an invaluable way to document the historic development of towns and cities as well as individual properties. Online access to Iowa’s Sanborn fire insurance maps is now available free of charge through the State Library of Iowa website at: http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/services/resources/sanborn-login.
Researchers can access historic fire insurance maps for more than 360 Iowa towns and cities from the 1870s to the 1930s.
