Foundation Hires New Membership Coordinator

Sarah McKiness has been hired by the Iowa Historical Foundation as the membership coordinator. She began her duties May 2.

Sarah, a self-proclaimed history buff, has been surrounded by Iowa history much of her life.

“I have many great memories of annual treks to the Historical Building from Oskaloosa, the town where I grew up,” she said.

Sarah has lived in Des Moines for more than 30 years, the last three of which have been in a 99-year-old home in Historic Valley Junction, West Des Moines. She likes living there because of the small town atmosphere and the conveniences and benefits of living in a larger town. She also likes being close to her two children and grandson.

Sarah previously worked at the Des Moines Art Center for three years where she focused on membership retention, acquisition and benefit delivery. Prior to that, she worked for The Principal Financial Group for 15 years in its Retirement Services division. Her last 10 years there were spent in Principal’s training department as a training analyst in the marketing and communications department where she was an investment writer.

Since joining the Iowa Historical Foundation, Sarah immediately began working on membership details. Her goal is to restore the membership of the State Historical Society to its previous numbers.

“I am a firm believer that we must learn the lessons of the past before we can be successful in the future,” she said. “I am thrilled to be part of an organization that has such a big impact on our school children as well as adults.”

Sarah can be reached at 515-281-6911 or Sarah.McKiness@iowa.gov.
