Blues Before Sunset
State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust, Des Moines

Free outdoor weekly blues concert featuring a different band each week. Fridays, 5-7 p.m. on the southwest outdoor terrace of the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust, Des Moines. Beer, wine, soft drinks, snacks available for sale. In conjunction with East Village Friday Nights, which also includes a street market with vendors selling prepared foods, flowers, fine arts and crafts and seasonal vegetables. Winefest

Hundreds of vintners from across the country come to Des Moines to offer samples of their wines. Begins June 9 with “Prima Dinners” held at metro area cultural organizations. June 10: “Wine Discovery: Sips & the City,” begins at State Historical Building, then moves to other locations in the metro area. June 11: 10 a.m.-2 p.m., “Sip ‘n’ Shop,” vintners set up in East Village stores to offer samples of their wines. June 11: Evening, “Grand Tasting,” State Historical Building. Margaret Anderson Organ Recital

Union Sunday School

Union Sunday School houses the largest Kimball pipe organ of its kind existing in the United States today. Musicians regularly hold recitals playing the organ for the public. This is the first in a monthly series of recitals. Call 563-423-7173 for more information.

Exclusive Viewing Party for Yankee Doodle Pops
7:30 p.m.
State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust, Des Moines

Begin the Fourth of July holiday in style with a gourmet picnic dinner outside on the Grand Terrace of the State Historical Building while listening to the annual Yankee Doodle Pops concert featured on the steps of the State Capitol. Then, have the best seats in the house for the fireworks show over the Capitol. This fundraiser benefits the State Historical Society of Iowa and the Des Moines Symphony. Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration at the Trails Center
6 p.m. until after the fireworks.

Join your friends at the Western Historic Trails Center in Council Bluffs for carnival games, a pie bake off, most patriotic outfit contest, and prizes. There will be a bake sale and other food for sale. Top off the evening by watching the Rosenblatt Stadium fireworks from your own lawn chair in the parking lot. Tickets are $5 per car and include one free packet of game tickets per person. Pie bake off entry forms must be picked up at Western Historic Trail Center before July 2.
