Connect Generations: Getting to Know Iowa's Heroes

The State Historical Society hosted an evening of Iowa history at the Warren County Historical Society on August 27. About 100 SHSI members attended the event where they met some of Iowa’s Civil War heroes.

Historical Society Curator Bill Johnson and Textile Conservator Sheila Hanke told the crowd how they preserve Iowa’s Civil War Battle Flags and brought alive the soldiers who carried them into battle. Civil War re-enactors in full uniform were on hand to present the details of flag preservation and Civil War history.

Jerome Thompson, State Curator, discussed the new Iowa Preservation Center, a State Historical Society of Iowa initiative that provides preservation and conservation consultation services to interested individuals and organizations.

Several organizations came together to organize the event, including the Indianola School District, the Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune, the Warren County Genealogical Society, local Questers, and State Representative Mark Davitt and State Senator Doug Shull.

In the coming months, the State Historical Society will be hosting more of these special events across the state. Check our Web site, www.iowahistory.org for a lecture in your area!
