Do You Know…Mike Vogt?
The
State Historical Society of Iowa relies on its board members for support and direction.
These men and women have varied backgrounds, and bring their experiences and expertise
to help guide the organization in its work. This month we feature Mike Vogt, a
relatively new face on the board. Below are some questions that will help you
get to know Mike Vogt better:
How did you first get involved with the SHSI Board?
A friend of mine and past college history instructor, Tom Colbert, suggested I
run for election. I ran unsuccessfully in 1995 and successfully in 2003.
Why did you want to be on the SHSI Board?
I was familiar with SHSI activities and had worked with several of the staff on
a number of committees. At the time of the 2003 election there were no other board
members employed at a museum. I wanted to bring that additional perspective to
the Board.
What is your profession?
I was trained as a historian and have been a curator at the Iowa Gold Star Military
Museum at Camp Dodge since March of 1999.
What are some of your hobbies?
Woodworking, target shooting (sometimes furry targets), reading, free-lance writing.
What's the best advice you’ve ever received?
My father told me long ago: “It doesn't cost anything to say ‘please’
and ‘thank you’.”
What is your most treasured possession?
I have two sepia-tone postcards of my grandfather as a German soldier in WWI wearing
a spiked helmet. Enlarged versions hang framed on my dining room wall at home.
What’s the ONE THING you always have to have in your refrigerator
at home?
Milk.
