Celebrate Community History!
Iowans are invited to celebrate community history May 8 in conjunction with National Historic Preservation Month. This annual event is a day-long celebration and symposium of historic preservation topics that explore ways to strengthen Iowa’s historic assets.
Now in its 11th year, Celebrate Community History recognizes:
• Iowa’s varied and important historic properties with a visual
review of homes, farms, factories, churches and archaeological sites listed
on the National Register of Historic Places during the previous year;
• efforts of property owners to ensure that these properties are preserved
through the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance’s Best of Preservation
Awards;
• efforts of historic property owners to ensure that these properties
continue as vital parts of our communities by identifying outstanding projects
that used the federal and state tax credit programs;
• the most significant books on Iowa history published during the
preceding year through the Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award;
• community activists who have undertaken outstanding programs and
projects in Iowa history through the Loren Horton Community History Awards;
and
• those who have given outstanding service to Iowa students participating
in the Iowa History Day program with the Kids Count! Award.
The celebration also includes workshops throughout the afternoon on topics
such as grants, historic tax credits and maintaining a National Register
property. Cost to attend Celebrate Community History is $15 before April
28 or $30 after April 28 and at the door. For more information or to register,
