Historic Sites Open for Season
Memorial Day

Many of the State Historical Society’s historic sites will open to the public Memorial Day weekend, May 27. Hours are:

Montauk, Clermont
Hours: Noon to 4 p.m. daily. Call (563) 423-7173. Groups by appointment.

Plum Grove, Iowa City
Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop, Haverhill
Hours: Daily, Noon to 4 p.m. Groups by appointment

Toolesboro Indian Mounds, Toolesboro
Hours: Daily, Noon to 4 p.m. Groups by appointment.

Gardner Cabin, Arnolds Park
Hours: Mon-Fri, Noon to 4 p.m., Sat-Sun, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. School groups by appointment.

Western Historic Trails Center, Blood Run and American Gothic House are open year round. Visit www.iowahistory.org/sites for information on hours and locations.


Blues Before Sunset
Fridays, June 2-Aug. 4, 5-7 p.m.
State Historical Museum, 600 E. Locust

Popular summer blues series Blues Before Sunset returns to the State Historical Museum June 2 with well-known headliner the Blue Band. Different bands will play each week. Performances are held on the outdoor southwest terrace of the building and are free and open to the public. Beer, wine, bottled water and soft drinks are available for sale. Those who attend are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Call (515) 281-4011 for information.

Medal of Honor Exhibit Opening & Ceremony
June 30

The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest military honor, given for distinguished gallantry during hostile action. It is presented by the President of the United States in the name of Congress. Authorized in 1861, the Medal has recognized the valor and sacrifice of 96 Iowans in 10 major conflicts. The State Historical Society of Iowa proudly presents Iowa Medal of Honor Heroes, a multi-media kiosk exhibit located in the Rotunda of the State Capitol. The kiosk will be unveiled with a special ceremony June 30.
