Department of Cultural Affairs Seeks Interns, Volunteers

The following positions are currently available at the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs for interns or volunteers. For more information or to volunteer, contact Sarah Macht, volunteer coordinator, at (515) 242-5193 unless otherwise noted.

Iowa Arts Council intern: Public relations, business, communications, English major or related field. Need good computer and writing skills for research, writing and data entry projects. Unpaid position, but will work with your school so projects earn independent study credit.

Iowa Arts Council volunteer: Update lists of galleries, museums, arts organizations and performers with current contact information on Web site. Conduct Web searches to find galleries and groups not on the lists.

Historic Preservation catalog volunteer: Knowledge of computer and filing is needed. Duties include: data entry in Word software, pulling and replacing files, selecting significant information from nomination documents and typing summary paragraphs into a table, scanning photographs and inserting scanned photographs into a table. Immediate need for two people. Negotiable hours, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Museum Education assistant: Greet visitors and tour groups primarily from schools. Give orientation talks. Help with special programs. Help groups with educational materials in the exhibits. Assist educator with mailings, scheduling and general office work.

Museum Tour docents: Give special tours of exhibits for school groups during the week or to the public on the weekends and holidays. Assist curators on weekend vault tours of the collections. Reliable, good communicators needed. Special training provided in subject matter and tour formats. Information needs to be presented in a knowledgeable, interesting manner. Need good communicators who enjoy working with children. Flexibility, reliability and a good sense of humor helpful.

Museum Theatre: Help with marketing, greeting, ticket help, ushering and workshops. Contact Maureen Korte for more information: (515) 281-4132 or Maureen.Korte@iowa.gov.

Public relations/marketing: Update email media distribution list by looking up newspaper, TV and radio contact information on Web or over phone.

Museum Information Desk - Weekend receptionist/greeter: Greet visitors as they come into the building and ask them to sign a visitor’s sheet. Answer questions about the building and local areas, as well as general questions about exhibits. Minimum age 12 accompanied by an adult. Training provided. Shifts available between open hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Noon and 4:30 p.m. Sundays.

Researcher: Conduct research in records and newspaper in Historical Library for Iowa stoneware pottery exhibit catalog. Hours flexible Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
