A Historic Birthday

Abbie Gardner Sharp CabinSave the date!

The Abbie Gardner Sharp Cabin in Arnold’s Park turns 150 years old this July. In honor of the occasion, the State Historical Society of Iowa is planning a weekend of activities, demonstrations and programs for July 15-16, in conjunction with the annual University of Okoboji Homecoming Weekend.

Thirteen-year-old Abbie Gardner was an eyewitness to one of the few violent conflicts between European-American settlers and Native Americans in Iowa (what became known as the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre). The cabin has been restored to approximately resemble its 1856 character, and nearby are a monument to those killed, a park and a visitor’s center full of artifacts.

The Lakes are a popular vacation destination in the summer, so mark your calendars and make your lodging reservations soon!
