Western Historic Trails Earns Grant for Prairie Restoration
Western
Historic Trails Center's request for $27,980.55 for complete restoration of
the prairie was fully funded by Iowa West Foundation. WHTC is partnering with
the National Park Service, Pottawattamie County Pheasants Forever, Iowa DNR, Pottawattamie
County NRCS, the US Fish and Wildlife Service as well as Iowa West Foundation
to create a historically correct native prairie at the Center.
WHTC Site Manager KC Hummel said the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will provide seed and work on the project will begin this spring.
“The prairie is such a vital resource to what we do here at the Trails Center,” Hummel said. “We are excited to begin this project so our visitors can view the native grasses and wildlife of Iowa.”
Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Deputy Director Monica Fischer and Hummel attended a reception for grantees at the Harrah's Conference Center in Council Bluffs on Tuesday, February 28. Iowa West has granted over $150 million to area non-profits since its inception in 1994.
March Events at Western Historic Trails Center
Student Art Exhibit March 1-31, 2006
Stop in and enjoy artwork by some of Iowa’s most talented young
artists throughout the month of March. Council Bluffs area art instructors have
selected these fine works to be put on display as part of Youth Art Month.
Celebrating Women’s History Month
Celebrate
the many uses of the common kitchen apron throughout history, from the 1950s,
when television shows and magazine ads portrayed women wearing them for every
occasion, to the 1990s, when aprons made their way to the fashion runway as the
“apron dress.”
Western Historic Trails Center and The Pottawattamie County Historical Society will present “Women and Their Aprons Throughout History,” March 19 at 2:00 p.m. Bring your own apron or stories to share! Youth friendly activities will follow a presentation on the topic by Museum Guide Teressa Sward. WHTC will also showcase a collection of aprons March 10-30. The presentation highlights and celebrates Women’s History Month. Call (712) 366-4900 for information.
