The Trails West Gift Shop at Western Historic Trails Center is the Headquarters for Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Education! Contact gift shop staff at 712-366-5077.

Jam and Bread
Thursdays every month, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Local musicians gather at trails center to play old time country, bluegrass, blues, etc. Open to anyone who plays, sings or just wants to listen. Free homemade bread!

Ongoing exhibits and videos interpret four western expansion trails: Lewis & Clark, Mormon Pioneer, California and Oregon.

Fish at Saganaush Lake
Fishing continues in Council Bluffs! A fishing license and trout fee can be obtained at any local hunting and fishing license sales agent, including Western Historic Trails Center, or from the Iowa DNR homepage at iowadnr.gov.

2008 Lewis & Clark White Catfish Encampment and
The Mormon Battalion Trek Celebration
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This year’s event combines two eras of local area history. Lewis and Clark passed through here in July of 1804. Their five day respite from the Missouri river became known as the Camp White Catfish. In 1846 the Mormon Battalion mustered near what is now Iowa School for the Deaf and marched south about 2000 miles to participate in the Mexican-American War. Here is the schedule for our combined commemoration of these two important historic events of this area.

Both re-enactor camps will open for public visitation at 9:00 AM each day.

Saturday, July 26

Presentations will occur in the Trail Center theatre.

10:00 AM- 10:50 AM Fr.Tom Coenen- 1905 L&C Centennial Celebration featuring his vintage postcard collection.

11:00 AM- 11:50 AM Kevin Henson- A Virtual Tour - The 1846 Mormon Battalion Trail – Iowa to California

Noon- Lunch for available for purchase from Wynema Morris and family, Omaha Tribe

1:30 PM- 2:20 PM Michael McDonald will share his musical tribute to the Corps of Discovery of Lewis and Clark.

2:30 PM- 4:30 Panel Discussion- Remembering the Pioneers of the Winter Quarters Era: The People, Places, and Paths They Trod 1846 – 1863.

  • Moderator: Terry Latey Pioneer Research Group of Winter Quarters Early LDS Database Administrator
  • Opening - Welcome, introduction of panelists (5 min)
  • Panelist Presentations (90 min including a 10 minute break)
  • Gail Holmes - Overview of the history of Winter Quarters –Kanesville (20 min)
  • Kevin Henson- Mustering the Mormon Battalion at Council Bluffs (20 min)
  • Break (10 min) o Bob Sharp - The Cemeteries of the Middle Missouri Valley (20 min)
  • Dr. Van Orden - Gathering, Writing, and Publishing Family-based Histories from the Pioneer Period (20 min)

Sunday, July 27

11:00 AM- 11:50 AM Kevin Henson presents “Pomp’s Circumstances; The Life of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau - Sacajawea’s Son”

Noon- Lunch for available for purchase from Wynema Morris and family, Omaha Tribe

1:30 PM- 2:20 PM Mathew “Sitting Bear” Jones (Otoe/Missouria Tribal member) “Lewis and Clark meet the Otoe or the Council Bluff Encounter”.

2:30 PM- 3:20 PM Kevin Henson- When Johnny Came Marching Home ; Battalion Members Return to Council Bluffs
